What Is It?

Er Xian Tang is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formula traditionally used to support individuals experiencing a combination of Kidney Yin and Kidney Yang deficiency with deficiency heat.

This seemingly mixed pattern can occur during midlife and menopausal transitions, when the body's warming and cooling systems are both becoming depleted. A person may therefore experience symptoms of heat—such as hot flashes and night sweats—alongside symptoms of deficiency, such as fatigue, weakness, or feeling cold at other times.

Er Xian Tang combines warming and nourishing herbs with herbs traditionally used to clear deficiency heat and support hormonal balance from a TCM perspective.

Common Uses

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, Er Xian Tang may be used to support:

  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Menopausal and perimenopausal transitions
  • Alternating sensations of heat and cold
  • Occasional irritability or restlessness
  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Low back or knee weakness associated with Kidney deficiency
  • Healthy sexual vitality
  • General well-being during midlife hormonal transitions
  • TCM patterns involving Kidney Yin and Yang deficiency with deficiency heat

These traditional uses are based on TCM theory and are not intended to diagnose or treat menopause, hormonal disorders, or other medical conditions.

Herbal Ingredients

The traditional Er Xian Tang formula contains six primary herbs:

  • Xian Mao (Curculigo Rhizome) – Traditionally warms and tonifies Kidney Yang and supports vitality.
  • Yin Yang Huo (Epimedium) – Tonifies Kidney Yang and supports strength and vitality.
  • Ba Ji Tian (Morinda Root) – Supports Kidney Yang while traditionally strengthening the lower back and knees.
  • Dang Gui (Chinese Angelica Root) – Nourishes and invigorates Blood and supports healthy circulation.
  • Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Rhizome) – Clears deficiency heat and nourishes Yin.
  • Huang Bai (Phellodendron Bark) – Traditionally clears deficiency heat and damp-heat from the lower body.

How It Works

Traditional Perspective

In TCM, the Kidneys are associated with reproductive vitality, aging, Yin, Yang, and the body's foundational reserves.

During menopause and other periods of constitutional change, both Kidney Yin and Kidney Yang may become deficient. When Yin is insufficient, the body's cooling and nourishing functions may become less effective, contributing to deficiency heat. At the same time, Yang deficiency may contribute to fatigue, weakness, decreased vitality, or periods of feeling cold.

Er Xian Tang traditionally works by:

  • Tonifying Kidney Yang
  • Supporting Kidney Yin
  • Clearing deficiency heat
  • Nourishing Blood
  • Supporting vitality and healthy aging
  • Helping restore balance between the body's warming and cooling functions

The combination of warming and cooling herbs is what distinguishes Er Xian Tang from formulas intended solely for Yin deficiency or solely for Yang deficiency.

Who It May Be Best For

This formula may be appropriate for individuals who:

  • Experience hot flashes or night sweats during the menopausal transition
  • Alternate between feeling unusually warm and feeling cold
  • Experience hot flashes together with fatigue or weakness
  • Notice decreased vitality during perimenopause or menopause
  • Have low-back or knee weakness associated with a TCM Kidney deficiency pattern
  • Have symptoms involving both heat and deficiency, rather than a purely hot or purely cold presentation
  • Present with a practitioner-identified pattern of Kidney Yin and Yang deficiency with deficiency heat

Because menopausal symptoms can arise from several different TCM patterns, a professional evaluation is recommended before selecting this formula.

Contraindications & Precautions

  • Not appropriate for every person experiencing hot flashes or menopause; symptoms caused predominantly by excess heat, pure Yin deficiency, or other TCM patterns may require a different formula.
  • Consult a qualified healthcare professional before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Individuals with a history of hormone-sensitive medical conditions should discuss herbal supplementation with their healthcare provider before use.
  • Use caution when taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications, particularly because the formula traditionally contains Dang Gui.
  • Yin Yang Huo (Epimedium) may interact with certain cardiovascular, blood-pressure, or other medications and may not be appropriate for everyone.
  • Individuals taking prescription medications, including menopausal hormone therapy, should have the complete ingredient list reviewed by their healthcare provider or pharmacist.
  • New or unexplained vaginal bleeding, bleeding after menopause, severe pelvic pain, or other significant changes should be medically evaluated rather than assumed to be part of a normal menopausal transition.
  • Discontinue use and consult your healthcare provider if unexpected or worsening symptoms develop.
