How many sessions are needed?

Typically, the longer the patient has the condition, the longer the course of treatment. Acupuncture can be done as often as five times a week, or as little as once a month. At The Point of Health Wellness Center the average course of treatment per condition is 10 sessions.

What is the difference between Dry needling and acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the practice of strategically placing thin, tiny needles in the body. The placement of needles is based on several diagnostic techniques that has been used for over 2000 years. Dry needling is a relatively new treatment option that places needles in “trigger points” in muscles. The placement of the needles is based on muscles tension.

Is it better to get Acupuncture from a medical doctor or from an acupuncturist?

That depends on the medical doctors training. According to the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture medically trained physicians take a course that has 6 sections.  The first two sections are Home Study sessions which take about 4-6 hours to complete. Once the home study sessions are complete there are 4 sessions to complete in person which take 3 hours. Once they have completed this course they are able to practice acupuncture. In total medical doctors spend at most 24 hours training in acupuncture.

However, a licensed acupuncturist in the state of Georgia completes 4 years of post undergraduate training in Oriental Medicine. After graduating from an accredited Oriental Medical School, acupuncturist are required to take 3 state board licensing exams. Once obtaining the state license the acupuncturist is then required to complete a 1 year residency. Finally when training is completed the acupuncturist is allowed to practice on their own.

What is Moxibustion?

Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that involves the burning of dried mugwort on particular points on the body. The purpose of moxibustion is to strengthen the body, relax the muscles, and facilitate the smooth flow of blood, nutrients, and oxygen. The use of moxibustion expedites the healing process.

What is Cupping?

The cups are placed strategically on the body. These cups create suction and negative pressure that loosens muscles and encourages blood flow. Cupping is used to:

  • Relieve back and neck pains

  • Stiff muscles

  • Anxiety

  • Fatigue

  • Migraines

  • Rheumatism

  • Clear congestion from a common cold or help to control a person's asthma

  • Removes toxins

  • Improves blood flow through the veins and arteries

  • So much more

As result of the treatment you might experience mild bruising that will subside within 7 to 10 days.

What are Oriental Herbs?

The term Oriental Herbs is an umbrella term that encompasses all prescribed medicinal substances that are ingested. These “herbs” are mainly plant based, but some preparations include minerals or animal products. They can be packaged as powders, pill, tablets, or teas depending on the herb and its intended use. Different herbs have different properties and balance particular parts of the body.

What to Expect and How to Prepare for Acupuncture Treatment

  • Turn off your phone before you enter the office.

  • Wear loose clothing that allows easy access to acupuncture points.

  • The initial exam will likely include a thorough examination of your tongue and pulse for diagnostic purposes and usually last for 1.5 hours.

  • Because the needles are quite thin, you probably won’t even feel them after insertion or, at most, you’ll detect a quick pin prick.

  • Eat something a couple hours before your session. Acupuncture can leave you feeling woozy or depleted if you start with an empty stomach.

  • Skip drinking alcohol and avoid caffeine before your session.

  • Schedule your appointment so that you can have some down time after your treatment, as you may feel tired or spacey. You may even fall asleep during your session.
