The Coronavirus is a topic that has inspired quite a bit of fear and confusion as of late. The mixture of misinformation via social media and lack of information from our government officials has left folks scrambling for answers. We here at The Point of Health want to assuage your fears and equip you with information, the best medicine to fight the unknown. This virus has been around for years and although this is a new strain we’ve compiled a series of facts and tips to aid in the current uncharted territory we’ve found ourselves.

The Coronaviruses, named for the crown-like spikes on its surface, are categorised in four main sub-groupings of coronaviruses:

  • Alpha

  • Beta

  • Gamma

  • Delta

There are 7 seven coronaviruses that can infect people, the most common being:

  • 229E (alpha coronavirus)

  • NL63 (alpha coronavirus)

  • OC43 (beta coronavirus)

  • HKU1 (beta coronavirus)

Other strains that can affect humans are:

The origins of this COVID-19 strain is unknown; however, Chinese health authorities believe it likely came from a seafood market in Wuhan where wildlife had been illegally traded. Scientists have pointed to either bats or snakes as the source of the virus. It is imperative that we stay vigilant as to not further spread the virus to our most vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions. According to the W.H.O. (World Health Organization) signs of infection include:

  • Fever

  • Cough

  • Shortness of breath

  • Breathing difficulties.

In more severe cases it can lead to Pneumonia, multiple organ failure and when left untreated death. The estimated incubation period is 5-14 days; however, it is possible for an infected patient to be asymptomatic (meaning they do not display any symptoms despite having the virus in their systems) and unwittingly transmit the virus to at risk loved ones. There are currently over 1,000 cases in the U.S and counting which is why we stress not only social distancing but also preventative care.
